Miller was born in Boston but spent most of his career in Chicago, where he became a die-hard Chicago Bears fan and season ticket holder. During his many years teaching M.B.A. students, he focused on corporate finance issues. As public director of the Chicago Trade Board his interests shifted to the economic and regulatory problems of the financial services industry. In that role, he supported free-market solutions to economic problems. He was honored for work on the effect of firms' capital structure and dividend policy on their market price.
