Midway, Georgia

WGBH

Union troops led by General William Tecumseh Sherman ransacked Midway, 32 miles south of Savannah, during their destructive march through Georgia.

Two sequences involving freed slaves were shot in Midway: negotiations between plantation owner Fan Butler and her former slaves, and a community meeting with Freedmen's Bureau head O. O. Howard.

For a long time, the white, Southern version of Reconstruction was the accepted history. That's the sort of Gone With the Wind story. We do have some white, Southern young women in our story who are quite marvelous characters, who represent some versions of that history... and also some characters who have a very different idea of what ought to happen in Reconstruction. -- Elizabeth Deane, series producer
