The Confederate Army built their largest prisoner of war camp, Fort Lawton, in Jenkins County, 90 miles northwest of Savannah.

The film crew visited Jenkins County to film sequences at an antebellum plantation house that survived the Union Army's destructive sweep.

 We had a re-enactment -- a living history -- down at Fort Jackson one night and we were portraying the evacuation of Savannah. I had put a little red on my beard and I was sitting there.
