The French founded Natchitoches, Louisiana's oldest permanent settlement, in 1714. The Cane River National Historic Park, to the south of Natchitoches, is home to restored plantations.

The crew filmed two of the series' most violent scenes at Natchitoches: the assassination attempt against Marshall Twitchell and the ambush at Coushatta.
