Toni Anderson, Music Historian, on The Fisk University choir
 |
So he has this idea about the choir. Who is it, and what are they actually doing?
Anderson : White had formed a choir from the students on campus. They gave up half of their lunch hour to meet in his office and sing songs. He had had a lot of experience as a choir director. He was noted for his singing schools back in Ohio, before he had ever joined the Squirrel Hunters and fought in the Civil War. So it was a natural thing for him to form a choir at Fisk University. While all of the students at Fisk University took singing lessons or participated in music, George White was very careful to choose just the select ones that he wanted for his choir. The choir that he formed had performed throughout Nashville and had gotten rave reviews from local critics.
