Emily Emmett Dallas Summer Musical High School Musical Theatre Awards Flower Mound, TX

How did you get into theater?

I got into theater, musicals, and performing when, at the age of three, I watched, "The Wizard of Oz" over and over. I would sing the songs in my Dorothy dress and wish that I could have a voice like Judy Garland… My mother found the local community theater and I performed there for nine years… all the while developing my voice and acting and dancing. Once I entered high school I was very blessed to have the most dedicated and talented theater and music teachers and they furthered me into becoming a better performer and person.

Tell us about your family.

My grandma made me a quilt that has a piece of my costumes from each show I have ever done. That quilt is my favorite gift I’ve ever received. She also has taken my mother and me to a touring Broadway show each year since I was little. She is one of the other reasons I have come to love theater.

Who are some of your role models in entertainment?

Since I was little, I was drawn to watching musicals on TV. My favorites were Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, [and] Gene Kelly. As I grew I watched Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, and Cathy Rigby. All of these people gave me a deep appreciation for theater. I also admire Sutton Foster, Kristin Chenoweth, and Kelli O’Hara, whose footsteps I hope to follow [in] one day.
