How did you get into theater?

I have always loved to sing. I can remember singing in mini-church productions as God’s little angels. As I got older, I joined chorus, [and] through elementary and middle school I would always have parents of the other students comment on how I was the only one who showed any kind of facial expression while singing the traditional, choral songs. [W]hen I had the opportunity to go to a Performing Arts High School, I went out on a limb and auditioned for the Musical Theater Department, and got in! I have been hooked on learning everything I could about the art ever since.

Who are some of your role models in entertainment?

Some of my favorite performers to watch are Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Audra McDonald.

Why is performing important to you?

I can recall my freshman theater teacher saying, “We do theater as a cathartic release, and that feeling is the purpose behind all theater.” I truly believe this is why we do theater as a whole. There is some story out there for every emotion to be felt and to convey those emotions through beautifully written plot lines is the perfect way to let out those feelings inside you. I personally get enjoyment from theater because I know it’s a safe place to be myself, although I’m acting through someone else ... I am able to convey messages through my art to an audience, possibly dealing with similar problems [and] I maybe can help them… I love telling stories, and ultimately I want audiences watching me to learn from them.
