The Contenders: The vice-presidential candidacies of Geraldine Ferraro and Sarah Palin are recalled. In 1984, Ferraro became the first female vice-presidential nominee of a major party when Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale selected her as his running mate. In 2008, Sarah Palin put additional cracks in the glass ceiling when Republican presidential nominee John McCain chose her as his running mate.
