Teaching controversial artwork in the history classroom

Original source materials -- pictures, films, literature -- may present challenges when teaching art topics in the history classroom at the high school and college level. Should teachers show Michelangelo's David to adolescents? What about showing Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs to college students?
