Teaching controversial visual works of art

How should teachers approach images which may startle or offend students or their parents? How can context be provided?

Leni's works etc; teaching controversial works
Bob R. - 10:44am Jan 18, 2000

Many years ago when in High school, I received teachings on propaganda techniques. This could first be taught before the controversial subject is shown. Then touch on half truths (which to me are lies). Ask the students to find half truths in current publications, and in other media, then, find the complete truth; this could be done as a team. The world is full of half truths especially from those with vested interests.

Then the controversial topics could be shown, with offsetting (the other half of the truth) truths. An example could be to show Leni's works, then show Schlinder's List.
