Why can't I hear the sound clips?
The sound files on this site require the RealPlayer plug-in. To download and install the RealPlayer plug-in, follow the instructions available at www.real.com/,

Why can't I see the video clips?
The video clips on this site require the QuickTime 4 plug-in. To download and install the latest version of QuickTime, visit www.apple.com/quicktime/ and follow the instructions found on the site.

How can I print the pages with dark backgrounds?
To print pages from the site that have dark backgrounds, we recommend changing your browser setup to force the browser to use the default colors (black against gray). The settings to control this option may be found in the browser preferences which are listed under the view or edit menus in most browsers.

Why can't I access some of the pages on this site?
Selected pages in this site have been rated in accordance with the criteria established by SafeSurf. This means that if you have filtering based on SafeSurf criteria activated in your browser, you will not be able to see some pages on this site. For more information about this technology, including instructions on how to activate or deactivate filters, visit and the site for your browser manufacturer. For more information about the content on the Culture Shock site, please read the splash page.

Where can I find a text version of a particular page?
In many cases, we have provided text-only versions of pages on the site. These provide descriptions of photographs, audio clips, or film clips used on the site. To find a text-only version of a given page follow the link placed in the top right corner of the page, if available.

Why can't I see the message I just submitted in Soapbox?
The Soapbox forums are moderated and, as such, your message will not be available for viewing until it has been read and approved by the moderator.

Why is my Soapbox message being formatted strangely?
A message submitted to Soapbox can take advantage of some simple formatting features. For example, a line of a message that begins with a 'b' or an 'i' will be formatted as bold or italic text, respectively. Thus, when submitting a message with a line that reads

i think that i shall never see...

the text will be displayed as:

think that i shall never see...

Note that the initial 'i' is translated as an instruction to italicize text, not as a letter, and therefore does not appear in your posted message. Use a capital 'I' if you want the letter to appear. If you would like to begin a new paragraph, do so by hitting the return key twice.

Why am I getting JavaScript errors?
The Culture Shock Web site uses JavaScript sparingly, mostly for image rollovers. If you are seeing error messages, please send email to cultureshock_tech@wgbh.org, being sure to include the name and version number of your Web browser, the name of your operating system, and the URL of the page you were viewing when the error occurred.

What does "An error occurred processing this directive" mean?
The Culture Shock Web site uses server side includes to present the results of the "You Decide" votes. If server side includes are not functioning properly, an error message will be presented which reads "An error occurred processing this directive." If you see such a message, please report it by sending email to cultureshock_tech@wgbh.org.

How can I report a technical problem?
If you find a technical problem, especially one that is not covered in this FAQ, please send email to cultureshock_tech@wgbh.org describing the problem. Please be sure to note in your message: the URL of the page where the problem occurred, the name and version number of your Web browser, and the name of your operating system.
