Coming in January on FRONTLINE

December 20, 2013

As 2013 draws to a close, FRONTLINE is looking forward to returning in January with an exciting lineup of films.

From a dramatic examination of the government’s multi-year crackdown on insider trading at hedge funds, to a rare and revelatory look at life in North Korea under Kim Jong-Un, to a pre-Superbowl rebroadcast of our most talked-about film of the year, we’ll kick off 2014 with three documentaries that you can preview right now.

Jan. 7: To Catch a Trader

From the team behind FRONTLINE’s The Untouchables and Money, Power and Wall Street comes the story of the unprecedented government investigation that led to the largest insider trading case in U.S. history. Drawing on exclusively obtained video of hedge fund titan Steven A. Cohen, FBI wiretaps of other hedge fund traders, and interviews with both Wall Street and Justice Department insiders (including U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, the “sheriff of Wall Street”), FRONTLINE’s Martin Smith goes inside the government’s ongoing, seven-year crackdown on insider trading in the hedge fund industry.

Jan. 14: Secret State of North Korea

Just two years on the job and armed with nuclear weapons, North Korea’s Kim Jong-un is the world’s youngest dictator, ruling one of the world’s most isolated countries with an iron fist. Like his father and grandfather, he is trying to maintain tight control over what the world sees of North Korea—and what North Koreans see of the world. But in Secret State of North Korea, FRONTLINE director James Jones shines a light on the hidden world of the North Korean people, drawing on stunning undercover footage from inside the country as well as interviews with defectors—including a former top official—who are working to try to chisel away at the regime’s influence.

Jan. 25: League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis

The National Football League, a multibillion-dollar commercial juggernaut, presides over America’s indisputable national pastime. But the league has long denied football’s connection to long-term brain injuries. In this encore presentation of one of the most talked-about documentaries of 2013, FRONTLINE and prize-winning journalists Steve Fainaru and Mark Fainaru-Wada of ESPN reveal the hidden story of the NFL and brain injuries, drawn from their book League of Denial: The NFL, Concussions and the Battle for Truth.
