Coming in July on FRONTLINE
It’s been estimated that nationwide, approximately two-thirds of former prisoners are arrested again within three years of their release.
But across the country, a number of states are changing the way their parole systems work in an effort to reduce prison populations and lower recidivism.
Is it working?
On Tuesday, July 18, in a new documentary called Life on Parole, FRONTLINE goes inside an ongoing effort in one state — Connecticut — to rethink parole. The film follows four former prisoners as they navigate the challenges of their first year on parole.
With unique access inside Connecticut’s corrections system, the documentary explores how the state’s parole experiment is working — for the community, for law enforcement and for the parolees themselves as they try to re-enter society.
Also this month, we’ll bring you an encore presentation of our investigation with ProPublica into Terror in Europe — and an updated version of Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria, our look at the alarming rise of untreatable, antibiotic-resistant infections.

July 11: Terror in Europe

July 25: Hunting the Nightmare Bacteria
Described by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as “nightmare bacteria,” there are now predictions that drug-resistant superbugs will kill more people than cancer by 2050. From a young girl thrust onto life support in Arizona to an uncontrollable outbreak at one of the nation’s most prestigious hospitals, this updated version of our 2013 documentary explores the rise of the superbug threat, and whether the age of antibiotics may be coming to an end.
