Concussion Watch: NFL Head Injuries in Week 7
A total of 53 NFL players have been sidelined by a concussion during the 2013 season, and in Week 7, at least four more players appeared to go down with a head injury.
Among the injured this past weekend was San Diego Chargers lineman King Dunlap. If his concussion is confirmed, Dunlap would become the first player this season to suffer a second head injury. In 2012, 10 players across the league experienced multiple concussions.
Final injury reports for Week 8 games will be released beginning Thursday. In addition to Dunlap, here are the other potential concussions that we’ll watching for.
Reed Doughty, Washington Redskins
Reed Doughty went down with an apparent concussion in Week 7 after an onside kick attempt by the visiting Chicago Bears. As Yahoo Sports reported:
“Doughty was running to the scrum to try to help his teammates recover the football when he took a hit that caused his concussion. On the field, Doughty was down on all fours holding his head while trainers tended to him. Some reported of him even trying to walk to the wrong sideline afterward.”
King Dunlap, San Diego Chargers
This week’s concussion was the second in less than a month for Dunlap. “There is no telling the amount of time he will miss,” reported The San Diego Union-Tribune. The Chargers lineman sat out for two games after his first injury during Week 3.
In 2012, at least 10 NFL players sustained multiple concussions.
Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles
Nick Foles was placed in the league’s concussion protocol following Philadelphia’s Week 7 loss to the Cowboys, Coach Chip Kelly confirmed in a press conference after the game.
“I saw Nick after the game … He seems like he’s doing well,” Kelly said.
Foles was injured after being slammed to the ground by a pair of Dallas defenders. His head hit the turf as he fell out of bounds.
Earl Wolff, Philadelphia Eagles
Earl Wolff was the second Philadelphia player to go down with a head injury during Week 7. The Eagles announced on Twitter that their rookie safety was taken to the locker room for examination in the third quarter after colliding with Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant near the middle of the field.
