It is made possible, in part, by the largest single grant ever issued by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting ($15 million) as well as by ExxonMobil, which sponsored the series for over thirty years. According to PBS president Pat Mitchell, "... A talented assemblage of international filmmakers is applying ... high standards to seminal works by America's literary masters, including Langston Hughes, Willa Cather, Eudora Welty, and Henry James. It is an ambitious project and one that reflects PBS's commitment to providing the very best dramatic presentations available anywhere on television."
