-- The New Yorker
Actor/director Paul Newman's first appearance on Broadway in 38 years is a highlight of the Westport Country Playhouse production of Thornton Wilder's classic Our Town which played to sold-out audiences on Broadway.
First produced in 1938, the Pulitzer-Prize winning Our Town has become an American stage treasure and is Wilder's most renowned and frequently performed play. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the play reveals the ordinary lives of the people in the small town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, U.S.A.
As the Stage Manager, Newman narrates Wilder's immortal tale of love, marriage and death and daily life. Also starring are Frank Converse and Jayne Atkinson as Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs, Jeffrey DeMunn and Jane Curtin as Editor and Mrs. Webb, and Ben Fox and Maggie Lacey as George and Emily.
The play, airing as part of Masterpiece Theatre's American Collection, is "a wonderful gift for fans of great drama," according to executive producer Rebecca Eaton. "Our Town is the quintessential American play and a perfect fit for our American Collection. What an honor to add Paul Newman to Masterpiece Theatre's roster of great actors!"
