Brooklyn, 1938. Sylvia Gellburg is stricken by a mysterious paralysis in her legs for which Dr. Henry Hyman can find no cause. Gradually, she reveals to him her profound anxiety both about her marriage to her husband Phillip and events taking place in Germany where thousands of Jewish shops have been looted in Berlin, synagogues razed and Jewish people killed. Dr. Harry Hyman cuts a dashing picture riding horseback on Brighton Beach. He has a loving, warm relationship with his wife. Charming, self-confident, relaxed, Harry forms a dramatic contrast to Sylvia's husband Phillip whose sense of self-loathing extends to the bedroom where he and Sylvia are strangers to each other. The events in Germany which obsess Sylvia are coiled around when Dr. Hyman investigates her strange relationship with her husband. And when the two seemingly unrelated situations come together, Hyman starts to have a profound and moving effect on both their lives. Neither Sylvia nor Phillip will ever be the same again.
