Description
The story opens in 1914, just as World War I breaks out. Wimsey attends a wedding in Norfolk and the Wilbraham emeralds are stolen. A man is jailed for the robbery, but the jewels are not recovered. Eighteen years later, as the result of an accident, Wimsey finds himself back in the village of Fenchurch St. Paul faced with an unsolved mystery, a dead man, and a denouement in a bell tower which almost costs him his own life as he realizes the identity of the killer.
