Description
Claudius, a sickly youth beset by a variety of physical ailments including stuttering, seemed destined more for imbecility than imperial grandeur. While others played deadly games for power, Claudius shielded himself with his infirmities (which he deliberately cultivated as dangers grew) and wrote history. Then, in the wake of Caligula's bloody, mad reign, Claudius was proclaimed emperor. The laughing stock of Rome's ruling family reached the pinnacle. "I, Claudius" follows the history of the family of Augustus, Rome's first Emperor as seen through the eyes of Claudius.
