Description
The Langtrys wedding night on Edwards yacht is a disaster; their relations do not imporve much in his gloomy Southampton house. Lillie learns Edwards fortune is non-existent; he will have to sell his yachts to pay his debts and refuses to look for work to augment their small allowance. After a near-fatal bout with typhoid, Lillie charms her doctor into convincing Edward that she will recover only in London, where she tries, unsuccessfully, to break into society. After returning to Jersey when her brother, Reggie, is in a fatal accident, Lillie, back in London, finally gets one invitation that is her passport to the social scene
