Description
Lillie is a sensational social success, a Professional Beauty. Artists clamor to paint her portrait; her likeness appears in shop windows alongside well-known society beauties. Millais puts a red Jersey Lily in her hand for contrast with her now-famous black dress (the only one she owns), and the portrait, on public exhibit, adds to Lillies celebrity. But invited to a ball in honor of Leopold, King of Belgium, and asked not to wear black, Lillie cannot afford another gown. Oscar Wilde, her friend and admirer, explains that a London dressmaker will gladly make one; the famous Mrs. Langtry need not pay for it for years. Lillie causes another sensation--in white velvet
