Description
British Navy Captain Robert Scott became a hero in the wake of a resounding failure to complete his mission. Because Norwegian Roald Amundsen, racing to the South Pole at almost the same time as Scott, was the first to reach the site, Scott missed his goal to become the first to plant his country's flag there. Yet after he and members of his team froze to death on their attempted return to civilization, he became a legend, a national hero held up as an inspiration to British fighting men on the eve of World War I. "The Last Place on Earth" recounts this race to the South Pole.
