Description
The timeless story of Mr. Chipping ('Chips'), the English schoolmaster. Chips first comes to Brookfield school as a young and nervous master who has problems disciplining his students. Eventually he overcomes this and settles into being an efficient but cold and uninspiring teacher. Then, years later, Chips meets the lovely Katherine. Though nearly 50, his life is suddenly transformed. To everyone's astonishment, they marry and enjoy a short period of idyllic happiness--ended by the death in childbirth of Katherine and their newborn son. Shattered, Chips seeks consolation in his work, and in his second home, Brookfield. Surviving the arrival of a new Headmaster, his wisdom and strength help the school through the horrors of World War I and the changing post-war world. Chips ends his years as a kindly and wise old man, much loved by everyone at Brookfield.
