Image of Monsignor Renard with three germansJohn Thaw (Goodnight Mr. Tom, Inspector Morse) stars as a Nazi-defying French priest in Monsignor Renard, a powerful new World War II drama series.

The series opens in 1940. Monsignor Renard has just arrived back in his hometown of Saint-Josse des Bois after leaving 20 years earlier to join the Catholic church. The village is filled with reminders of his former life, including Madeleine (Cheryl Campbell), his one time fiancée who has never forgiven him for choosing the church over her.

It is also filled with Nazis, since the German army has overrun France and is preparing to invade England using Saint-Josse as an embarkation point.

Against this turbulent background, Renard ministers to his flock while being drawn ever deeper into the emerging resistance against the greatest force of evil the world has ever known.

Monsignor Renard was filmed at Saint Valery sur Somme on the Picardy coast of France.
