| Born in 1926, the first child of Bertie and Elizabeth, the Duke and Duchess of York, the Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was ten when her father became king. Because she then stood in line to inherit the throne, she began a formal preparation to be queen. In 1939 the thirteen-year-old Elizabeth met a nephew of her father's cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten. The eighteen-year-old Greek Prince Philip was a naval cadet who impressed his distant relation mightily. They became engaged in 1947 when he renounced his Greek nationality and became a British subject. Elizabeth was crowned Queen upon the death of her father in 1952. In 2002 she and her dominion celebrate 50 years of her reign, a milestone achieved by only four previous British monarchs. According to the Queen's Jubilee Web site, It is a time for looking back at the central role that The Queen has played in the life of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth over the last fifty years. It is also a time for looking forward and to the part the youth of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth will play in the future.
