Richard Harrington's previous credits include Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, the Antonia Bird-directed dramas Care and Rehab. He also guest-starred in several episodes of Spooks' third series (aka MI-5), as well as episodes of Dalziel and Pascoe and Silent Witness. Harrington had a brief stint on Coronation Street, playing Owen Williams, who unsuccessfully tried to woo Janice Battersby away from husband Les. He's also appeared in several films and stage productions, and narrated the 1998 BBC documentary Human Traffic. Krook The drunken and illiterate proprietor of a seedy rag-and-bottle shop. Known as the 'Lord Chancellor,' Krook collects Court documents. Mr. Smallweed finds a will, instrumental in the Jarndyce v. Jarndyce case, among his holdings. Krook is Mrs. Smallweed's brother. Originally from St. Helens, Lancashire, Johnny Vegas studied ceramics at Middlesex University and spent eighteen months in a seminary. His real name is Michael Pennington. Vegas is best known for his comedy work, which includes stand-up, TV presenting, and guest appearances on shows such as Shooting Stars, Johnny Vegas is no stranger to drama. He has appeared in the TV movies Tipping the Velvet and A Midsummer Night's Dream and the films 24 Hour Party People and The Libertine. Smallweed Grandfather (Joshua) Smallweed is a moneylender, a ruthless and mean old invalid in league with Tulkinghorn. Joshua's wife, the childish Grandmother, is Krook's sister. She gets cushions thrown at her whenever she mentions money. The Smallweed family also includes twin grandchildren, Bartholomew and Judy. Phil Davis first shot to fame in the film Quadrophenia (1979), based on an album by The Who. Since then he's appeared in many TV dramas and films including Alien3, In the Name of the Father, Secrets & Lies, Nicholas Nickleby, White Teeth and Casanova. His performance in Mike Leigh's Vera Drake was nominated for a BAFTA award and won Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards. Sergeant George (Rouncewell) Son of the Dedlock's housekeeper, Mrs. Rouncewell. George ran away to join the Army and cut himself off from his mother. After leaving the Army, he buys a shooting gallery in London with money borrowed from Smallweed. Smallweed pressures George to give him samples of Nemo's handwriting, in order to help Tulkinghorn learn Lady Dedlock's secret. Hugo Speer appeared in 1997's The Full Monty and was seen in Masterpiece Theatre's Warrior Queen as Dervalloc. He also appeared opposite Nicole Kidman in The Interpreter. Phil Squod Trooper George's assistant at the shooting gallery. Michael Smiley's previous credits include the role of a zombie in Shaun of the Dead. Nemo A shadowy figure, Nemo (Latin for nobody) is first seen working for Snagsby, copying legal documents by hand. He lodges at Krook's rag-and-bottle shop. His true identity is not known, but it's clear to many that he is a gentleman who has fallen on hard times. John Lynch, originally from Ireland, was educated at St. Colman's College, Newry, and Central School of Speech and Drama, London. His previous drama credits include The Secret of Roan Inish, Princess Caraboo, Moll Flanders and The Bridge of San Luis Rey. Lynch is also a writer, producer and director. In 2000 he wrote, directed and starred in Best, the life story of former Manchester United soccer legend, George Best. Mrs. Jellyby A woman involved in many good causes and charities, but who neglects her large family. Liza Tarbuck trained at the National Youth Theatre and then at RADA. Her varied career has ranged from roles in dramas like Linda Green to hosting shows such as The Big Breakfast and Without Prejudice. The daughter of comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, her TV credits stretch back to the mid-1980s when she starred in the sitcom Watching. Tarbuck was last seen on Masterpiece Theatre as Mrs. Barrymore in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Caroline (Caddy) Jellyby Mrs. Jellyby's oldest daughter and her personal secretary ("I'm pen and ink to ma"). Ignored by her mother, Caddy leaves home and marries Prince Turveydrop, the dance instructor. Natalie Press garnered much praise for her performance in the 2004 film My Summer of Love, in which she played Mona, a working-class tomboy from the Yorkshire countryside. She was nominated Best Actress by the British Independent Film Awards and the European Film Awards; she won that honor from the Evening Standard British Film Awards, the London Critics Circle Film Awards and the Stockholm Film Festival. Jenny A brickmaker's wife in St Albans, befriended by Esther after her child dies. After Lady Dedlock's secret is revealed, she helps her to flee, exchanging coats with her to throw Bucket off the scent. Charlie Brooks is best known to British audiences for her role as Janine Butcher in EastEnders. Her character bowed out of the soap in 2004, after murdering husband Barry Evans on their wedding day! Jo Urchin crossing-sweeper, who lives at Tom-all-Alone's, the property at the center of the Court case. When Jo shows Lady Dedlock the haunts of Captain Hawdon, Tulkinghorn arranges for Jo to be kept moving on from place to place. He befriends Esther at Bleak House. Fifteen-year-old Harry Eden says he knew he wanted to be an actor after watching a performance of Lionel Bart's musical Oliver! He appeared as Nibs in Universal Pictures 2003 film Peter Pan and then was cast as the Artful Dodger in Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist. Prince Turveydrop Son of old Mr. Turveydrop, the dancing master. Named "Prince" after the former Prince Regent. Bryan Dick appeared in the Russell Crowe film Master and Commander as carpenter's mate Joseph Nagle. He played Thomas Wyatt in Masterpiece Theatre's The Virgin Queen opposite Anne-Marie Duff. Dick's stage roles include Plasticine and Sliding With Suzanne at the Royal Court Theatre, London, and School Play at the Soho Theatre. Old Mr. Turveydrop A gentlemanly man, celebrated for deportment. He takes advantage of his son, Prince Turveydrop, preening around and spending his money. Although well known for his work as a TV host, Matthew Kelly is also an acclaimed stage actor. In 2004, he won an Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in Of Mice and Men at the Savoy Theatre, and has many other theatre credits to his name. In 2004, he presented the TV BAFTA awards. Bayham Badger A doctor and the cousin of Mr. Kenge, the solicitor to whom Richard Carstone is apprenticed. Dr. Badger's wife talks incessantly about her two former husbands, Captain Swosser and Professor Dingo. Richard Griffiths has appeared in many classic films such as Withnail and I, Gandhi, Chariots of Fire, Sleepy Hollow and the Harry Potter movies (as Uncle Vernon). He played the grotesque chef Swelter, in PBS' adaptation of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast. Prior to his TV and film work, he built up a reputation on the stage playing Shakespearean clowns with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2004, he proved a big hit as Hector in Alan Bennett's The History Boys at the National Theatre. The Reverend Mr. Chadband Greatly admired by Mrs. Snagsby, Chadband is a pompous, hypocritical clergyman, preaching God's love to street-urchin Jo but doing nothing while he starves. Robert Pugh has appeared in several Masterpiece Theatre productions including Miss Marple: A Murder is Announced, The Virgin Queen and Prime Suspect 6. He is working on the film The Last Legion, set in the final days of the Roman Empire, with Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley.
