The career and love life of Dr. Eleanor Bramwell reach a moving climax in the concluding five episodes of Bramwell, starring Jemma Redgrave as the feisty female physician in 1890s London.
After six seasons of doctoring to the downtrodden, Eleanor is at her wit's end. Her father's gloomy cousin, Mrs. Bruce (Jenny Agutter, The Railway Children), has taken over Eleanor's clinic in the East End. Her father, Dr. Robert Bramwell (David Calder), has run off with a brewery heiress. Her erstwhile fiancé, Dr. Finn O'Neill (Andrew Connolly), appears to be plotting to kill his new wife so he can get back together with Eleanor. Another prospective spouse is seeing prostitutes. And her latest love interest is going off to war in South Africa.
These setbacks may seem a prescription for disaster, but Eleanor's fans will want to stick with her to the final curtain as she comes to the brink of the 20th century. There are amazing prospects before her in the practice of medicine, not to mention in matters of the heart.
