Mr. Samuel Evans" ...He wasn't an Ogre, of course. Just a tall, thin, cross man with a loud voice, pale, staring, pop-eyes, and tufts of spiky hair sticking out from each nostril. Councilor Samuel Isaac Evans was a bully. He bullied his sister. He even bullied the women who came into his shop, selling them things they didn't really want to buy and refusing to stock things that they did. 'Take it or leave it,' he'd say. 'Don't you know there's a war on?' Alun Armstrong, a member of the original London cast of Les Miserables (1985), received the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sweeney Todd at the Royal National Theatre (1994/'93 season). A native of South Yorkshire, Armstrong's extensive career boasts a great range of roles in film (including Patriot Games, Braveheart and Van Helsing) and television (including Masterpiece Theatre productions Breaking the Code, Aristocrats, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and Bleak House). He will be seen as Uncle Garrow in the film version of Eragon, scheduled for release late in 2006. |
