Robert's Irish republican chauffeur Branson is a man of contradictions. He harbors a hatred for the British Empire and its establishment, and a love for a young woman whose family represents that very thing he seeks to destroy. After his meeting of the minds with Sybil in season 1, a political activist among the Crawleys is born, much to Lord Robert's dismay. But Branson may be further cause for dismay as he doggedly pursues his contradictory desires.
