Isobel Crawley

"But this is a war! And we must be in it together! High and low, rich and poor!" –Isobel

A member of the professional middle class, Matthew's widowed mother Isobel embodies an entirely different set of values than her more traditional peers at Downton Abbey, Violet and Cora. As a trained nurse and the widow and daughter of doctors, she considers herself a perfect fit to help adapt Downton to the pressing needs ushered in with the war, when the estate is converted to a convalescent home. But her habit of embracing responsibilities and overzealously giving orders creates conflict with Cora and a power struggle over the running of Downton Abbey.
