Lavinia, Matthew's fiancée, is the only daughter of a successful and wealthy London solicitor. Her mother is long dead and so father and daughter have grown very close in their large and comfortable Regent's Park house. Essentially a London girl, Lavinia feels out of place as the future mistress of a large country home, but loves Matthew fiercely and would do whatever it takes to make him happy. The intensity of her love for Matthew is compounded by the circumstances of the war, which allow them to be together only in brief bursts and threatens to take him away forever.
