Defined by honor and duty, Robert, Earl of Grantham, is devoted to preserving Downton Abbey and shepherding the great estate into the future. He is married to Cora, an American heiress, and is father to Mary, Edith and Sybil. Robert also enjoys a father-son relationship with Downton's heir, Matthew Crawley, in spite of Matthew and Mary's broken engagement. Eager to participate in the current war effort, Robert, a veteran of the Boer War, is somewhat adrift in his symbolic but diminished role.
