At a family gathering in London in 1909, seven-year-old Fleur Forsyte meets her young cousin Jon Forsyte, the son of Soames's (Damian Lewis) ex-wife, Irene (Gina McKee), by his first cousin Young Jolyon (Rupert Graves). Eleven years later, 18-year-old Jon (Lee Williams) and Fleur (Emma Griffiths Malin) meet at an art gallery. Realizing they have met as children, they hit it off again. Affairs of the heart also seize the older generation as Profond flirts with Winifred (Amanda Root) and Soames's wife, Annette (Beatriz Batarda). Meanwhile, Winifred's dissolute husband, Dartie (Ben Miles), hits bottom.

In a gambling marathon that wins him more than enough to pay his creditors, Dartie has the night of his life. Fleur accuses Profond of having an affair with her mother, Annette. Profond turns the tables by telling Fleur about Soames's long-ago marriage to Irene. This solves part of the riddle about the family feud but complicates Fleur's romance with Jon. When Mont asks Soames for Fleur's hand in marriage, Soames consents and hopes that Fleur will, too. In a private meeting, Young Jolyon tells her about his illness and asks her to give up Jon. She agrees, but soon makes plans with Jon to elope.

Later, in a stormy meeting with Jon, Jolyon reveals his real objection to Fleur's family.
