at the murder scene...

Stephen Lawrence
the murder victim, aged 18

Leon Black

I am sad and confused about this system where racists attack and go free, but innocent victims like Steve and I are treated like criminals.

Duwayne Brooks
Stephen's best friend, with him at the time of the murder

Joseph Kpobie

You are loved, you are loved...

Mr. Taaffe

friends, family + legal advisors...

No family should ever experience the last two years of our lives. This is the worst kind of fame. We have been brought into the public spotlight not by our own acts, but by the failure of others who were under a public duty to act...

Doreen Lawrence
Stephen's mother

Marianne Jean-Baptiste showed an aptitude for music as a child and later became interested in acting. She lives in South London with her husband Evan, a former dancer, and their two children. Her acting credits include the films Secrets & Lies (1996) with Brenda Blethyn, for which she received an Oscar nomination, and The Cell (2000). She has also appeared on stage in It's a Great Big Shame (1993) and Measure for Measure (1994) and on television in The Wedding (1998), an adaptation of the novel by Dorothy West.

We ... will not rest until all of Stephen's murderers are caught, convicted and punished appropriately... The racists must be told that the burial of Stephen is not the burial of our campaign for justice. It is only the beginning.

Neville Lawrence
Stephen's father

Hugh Quarshie was born in Ghana and studied at Oxford. After graduation, he worked as a journalist and became an editor at West Africa Magazine. He subsequently co-directed Othello at the Greenwich Theatre, and authored the play The Prisoner of Hendon.

He has appeared on television in Rumpole Of The Bailey (1978) and A Respectable Trade (1998) and in many films, including Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace (1999) as Captain Panaka.

We were constantly told by the police to trust them and that they were doing all they could. It obviously wasn't enough. As Nelson Mandela told us, black lives are cheap.

Cheryl Sloley
Stephen's aunt, Doreen's sister

Jo Martin

There has been a dreadful tragedy...

Ros Howells OBE
Lawrence family supporter, Lewisham Racial Equality Council chairperson, Labour peer

Dona Cross

I do lay the blame squarely at the Metropolitan Police's feet.

Imran Khan
the Lawrences' solicitor

Shaun Chawdhary appeared previously on Masterpiece Theatre in 1996's Interview Day.

The magnitude of the failure in this case, we say, cannot be explained by mere incompetence or a lack of direction by senior officers, or a lack of execution and application by junior officers, not by woeful under-resourcing. So much was missed by so many that deeper causes and forces must be considered...

Michael Mansfield QC
Lawrences' barrister

Scotsman Kenneth Cranham's comprehensive filmography includes Lady Audley's Secret (2000), Our Mutual Friend (1998), The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1996), Reilly: Ace of Spies (1983), Brideshead Revisited (1982) and Thérèse Raquin (1980).

I tried everything I could to communicate with the Lawrences. I wanted to be there for them... There was a tremendous barrier to communication... very, very soon after our initial meetings we were viewed with suspicion and mistrust.

DS Bevan

David Shaal

Mr. Lawrence was very, very shocked. His son had just died. How could you expect him to fully understand everything that was being said to him?

WDC Holden
Detective Constable Linda Holden, family liaison officer to Lawrences, involved in first investigation

Jenny Tarren

Mr. Lawrence, I wanted to say to you that I am truly sorry that we let you down. On behalf of myself and the commissioner, who specifically asked me to associate himself with these words, and the whole of the Metropolitan police, I offer my sincere and deep apologies...

DAC Ian Johnston
Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police

Stafford Gordon

I fully understand the grief and despair of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, but I am disappointed that there are others who seem to have chosen to take a less than objective view of our commitment to this inquiry.

In 1993 we were all arrested for the murder of Stephen Lawrence, which we all vehemently deny. We do sympathise with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence and the tragic loss of their son... We have no knowledge of this murder. We were not involved. We did not kill Stephen Lawrence.
