In Shakespeare: Othello, the Moor.

Originally a dancer, Eamonn Walker turned to acting following an injury. He has appeared in Unbreakable and Homicide: The Movie, as well as the HBO series Oz. Visit Masterpiece Theatre's interview with Eamonn Walker.

In Shakespeare: Iago, a villain ['ancient' or standard-bearer, and third in command to Othello].

British actor Christopher Eccleston, originally from Manchester, England, trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His filmography includes roles in The Others, Gone in Sixty Seconds and Elizabeth in which he played the Duke of Norfolk opposite Cate Blanchett in the title role.

Dessie Brabant
Keeley Hawes

Othello's true love
In Shakespeare: Desdemona, wife to Othello and daughter to Brabantio.

Keeley Hawes was 'discovered' in London at the age of 15 and went on to become a successful model. After a couple of years a casting agent, who had seen pictures of her in campaigns for Sisley and Benetton, asked her to come in for an audition. She got the job and her career -- and life -- changed direction.

Despite her Irish name, she has no Irish links. She comes from Marylebone where her father was a cabbie. She has three siblings and claims to be "a regular Londoner and homebody."

Hawes's other film and television roles have included Cynthia in Wives and Daughters, the young Diana Dors in The Last of the Blond Bombshells and Lizzie Hexam in Our Mutual Friend.

Michael Cass
Richard Coyle

A police superintendent, providing protection to Dessie
In Shakespeare: Cassio, an honorable Lieutenant.

Richard Coyle studied at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School; his film credits include a role in Mike Leigh's critically acclaimed Topsy Turvy and Masterpiece Theatre's Wives and Daughters (in which he played the smitten apprentice, Mr. Coxe).

He appears as the bizarre, inept but loveable Jeff Murdock in the hugely successful BBC2 comedy series Coupling.

Coyle is scheduled to appear with The English Touring Theatre in "The York Realist" by Peter Gill at the Royal Court Theatre, London during January and February of 2002.

Lulu
Rachael Stirling

Dessie's best friend
In Shakespeare: Emilia, wife to Iago.

Rachael Stirling, daughter of actress Diana Rigg, attended Edinburgh University and started out with the National Youth Theatre. She made her professional film debut in Still Crazy (1998), which received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy/Musical.
