First, Tom Branson was a chauffeur, downstairs among Downton Abbey's staff. Then he was a husband, upstairs at Sybil's side. Now neither chauffeur nor husband, he is simply an outsider…or so he feels. Tom tries to be the man that Downton requires of him, for Sybbie's sake, for Sybil's memory, and for the family he genuinely loves. But without Sybil to sustain him and without politics to motivate him, he feels like a failure and a fraud, and is more vulnerable than those around him can imagine.
