Matthew Crawley
By 1920, Matthew has survived not just the trenches and a bruised spinal cord; he has also survived the death of his fiancé, Lavinia Swire -- but not without guilt. While he begins his post-war life determined to marry his true love and forge ahead into a simpler, more resourceful future, nothing is quite so easy at Downton Abbey.

Dan Stevens
It might seem as though Dan Stevens has a penchant for inheritances, playing reluctant heir Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey and, in 2012, making his Broadway debut in The Heiress, an adaptation of Henry James' Washington Square. But his diverse career extends beyond stage and screen, with a distinctive literary bent. A contributor to London’s Daily Telegraph and The Times, he is editor-at-large for The Junket magazine and, in 2012, served as a judge for the prestigious literary Man Booker Prize. In addition to his recent theatrical work, Stevens starred in and executive produced the upcoming feature film, Summer in February, and welcomed a second child into his family.
Dan Stevens studied theater at the London based National Youth Theater and then English literature at the University of Cambridge, where he was a member of the amateur theatrical club, The Footlights. His numerous stage credits include Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour.
Stevens is familiar to MASTERPIECE fans for his role as Edward Ferrars in Sense & Sensibility. He was also seen in the MASTERPIECE production of Dracula, and appeared alongside Alicia Silverstone in the 2012 feature film Vamps.
