Spotlight: Miss Mardle, Liberated by Chocolate
We're all powerless to resist Amanda Abbington's portrayal of Miss Mardle in Episode 3 of Mr. Selfridge Season 2 when she finds ecstasy -- and liberation -- in chocolate.
Here are a few of our favorite, sweet moments from the episode, along with a few fun facts, comments from Abbington herself, and an exclusive video interview about the episode.
A SWEET HISTORY OF CHOCOLATE
Miss Mardle's seductive encounter with Monsieur Neuhaus and his delicious chocolates gives her a sugar high, and creates a store full of swooning women. The real-life Jean Neuhaus, Jr., expanding on his grandfather's idea, made the first filled chocolate in 1912.
A FUN, FLIRTY MISS MARDLE
"Miss Mardle pretends she's quite austere but there's a spark underneath the surface where men are concerned. I like playing that," Amanda Abbington said.
TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING...
What's not to love about portraying a character who is popping luxury chocolates into her mouth? "I love chocolate. But by the fifth take, I said, 'I can't actually do this any more. I feel sick,'" Abbington said.
