Engelbert Humperdinck, born Arnold George Dorsey in 1936, was one of ten children who grew up in a Leicester, England, family. At 11, he began to study music and at seventeen, he entered a singing contest. He assumed the stage name Gerry Dorsey.

After a bout with tuberculosis, he changed his name again, this time to Engelbert Humperdinck (after the Austrian composer of Hansel & Gretel). Over the years he has won Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe for "Entertainer of the Year" in 1988 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has been called the "king of romance," and generally sings songs with themes of love and love lost.
