The musically-gifted Lata Mangeshkar, popularly known as the "Nightingale of India" and the "Melody Queen," was born in 1929 and is today considered "the supreme voice of popular Indian music." She is one of the most recorded artists in the world with more than 30,000 solo, duet and chorus-backed songs recorded in 20 Indian languages between 1948 and 1987.

Her fêted style and phenomenal success made Lata unique. In addition to winning the Phalke Award for her contributions to Indian cinema, Lata received India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna ('Jewel of India') in 2001.
