To her horror, Mrs. Elspeth McGillicuddy witnesses the silhouette of a man in a passing carriage brutally strangling a mystery woman. As the brunette crumples to the ground, the other train speeds away, leaving a startled Mrs. McGillicuddy staring into the darkness and questioning her own sanity. The police think Mrs. McGillicuddy was dreaming, since there is no trace of a body. But her old friend Miss Marple suspects the worst. Retracing the route of the train, she concludes that the victim was thrown onto the grounds of Rutherford Hall, an estate inhabited by a dysfunctional family and a fresh corpse. When Miss Marple persuades a bright young friend to pose as a housekeeper at Rutherford Hall and gather clues, the mystery begins to unravel...
