Lucy Graham (Neve McIntosh, Psychos), a woman of mysterious background, entices her employer, Sir Michael Audley (Kenneth Cranham, Our Mutual Friend; Tenant of Wildfell Hall) into matrimony. Sir Michael's nephew Robert (Steven Mackintosh, Our Mutual Friend; Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels) returns to England from the Australian gold fields and is also smitten, but his mining partner, George Talboys (Jamie Bamber, Horatio Hornblower) has a shock of recognition on seeing Lucy's portrait. Seeking her out, he vanishes.
