Even the loyal Sergeant Lewis has to admit that all the clues point to Morse when Beryl Mewsome, played by Kevin Whately's wife, Madelaine Newton, is stabbed at a dress rehearsal for the local amateur dramatic society's production of The Magic Flute. lan McDiarmid, recently seen in the Iris Murdoch West End hit, The Black Prince, James Grout and Diane Fletcher also star. The mystery is written by Julian Mitchell and directed by Danny Boyle. This time, the charlatan had met his match in the Grim Reaper.
Infernal Serpent (from Series Four)

Morse and Lewis have to tackle a particularly unsavory case involving child abuse. Their enquiries into the murder of an eminent environmentalist, killed minutes before he was due to give a controversial lecture, unearth skeletons in the cupboard of a respectable academic family. Cheryl Campbell plays an investigative journalist who has some shocking and disturbing childhood secrets. Geoffrey Palmer, Barbara Leigh-Hunt and Irene Richard also star. Infernal Serpent is written by Alma Cullen and directed by John Madden.
