The Wench is Dead finds the more-than-normally glum Morse confined to a hospital bed awaiting test results that may spell more than just the end of his career. Still, he manages
to take on one of his most challenging cases: the 1859 murder of a young woman in the Oxford Canal, a crime that sent two possibly innocent men to the gallows. History repeats itself as the intractable Chief Inspector proves once again, you just can't keep a good Morse down.
