Move over, Miss Marple! Television's newest sleuth of a certain age has arrived on
this side of the Atlantic. Hetty Wainthropp, played by British actress Patricia Routledge, begins with a 90-minute premiere, Tbe Bearded Lady, and continues with three one-hour programs, Eye Witness, Widdershins, and Safe as Houses.
A favorite of Brit-com fans for her role as the insufferable Hyacinth Bucket in the PBS comedy series Keeping Up Appearances, Patricia Routledge brings a buoyant determination to her latest persona, the no-nonsense Lancashire housewife Hetty Wainthropp.
The character of Hetty Wainthropp first appeared in the novel Missing Persons by
David Cook, who serves as co-writer of the series with John Bowen. "The case in my
original novel, in which an elderly man asks Hetty to find his 50-year-old son, actually happened to my late mother," Cook says. "But my mother wasn't anywhere as confident and rambunctious as Hetty--or, indeed, Patricia Routledge!"
