Viking Deception, The

Ideas from Teachers

(Gr. 8-10)
Objective
To explore the steps taken by authorities in order to validate the authenticity of the Vinland Map, and to discern constructive evidence presented in the program that supports their case.

Materials

Procedure

  1. Arrange the classroom in two separate and somewhat equal groups. Group students by teacher direction or through random process.

  2. Provide each group with a copy of the Vinland Map and each student with a copy of the Evidence Sheet (the sheet contains the following headings: Mission, What is at risk?, Year, Procedure, and Evidence, along with the statement "Using this information, build your case. Include an opening statement, evidence supporting the statement, and a conclusion that reflects your opinion of the validity of the Vinland Map").

  3. Give each group a mission: One group is responsible for validating the authenticity of the Vinland Map by acquiring pertinent evidence from the program that supports their case. The other group is responsible for collecting evidence that disproves the validity of the Vinland Map.

  4. Instruct students to complete their Evidence Sheets as they watch the program.

  5. At the completion of the program, have student groups meet to present their cases in the most convincing manner possible.

Assessment
Groups present their cases, complete with opening statements, supporting evidence and information, and conclusive statement that reflects their opinion of the validity of the Vinland Map.

Classroom Tips
Display transparency containing hard-to-spell words, university names, book titles, etc. while students watch the program.
