(Gr. 8) Objective To expose 8th graders to the variety and numbers of African American scientists and a variety of careers in science, and to inspire 8th graders to be successful in science even when facing hardships. Materials - NOVA's "Forgotten Genius" program
- Internet sources on African American scientists and inventors
- access to computers
- Microsoft's PowerPoint application
Procedure Students choose 20 African American scientists from lists on Internet sites featuring more than 100 scientists. They surf the information, choosing their top 10 scientists for whom they find the basic biographical facts. They also need to be cognizant of whether there is more information available to them on these scientists since they will need to whittle down their lists to two scientists. They will be choosing (or be assigned) one scientist about whom they will be making a PowerPoint presentation. They will need at least three resources (a combination of Web and print resources) for their research. Assessment I have a rubric available on my website that can be accessed at staff.gpschools.org/dankod/rubric.htm Classroom Tips Introduce the project on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday or during Black History Month.
