Doctors' Diaries

Program Overview

NOVA tracks seven doctors over 21 years—from the first days of medical school through the rigors of internship and beyond—to reveal a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a doctor.

Hour 1 of the program:

  • introduces each of the doctors:

    • Tom Tarter, board-certified emergency physician
    • Luanda Grazette, cardiologist
    • David Friedman, ophthalmologist and public health researcher
    • Jane Liebschutz, internal medicine, primary care, and preventive medicine physician
    • Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, anesthesiologist and clinical trialist
    • Cheryl Dorsey, trained as a pediatrician
    • Jay Bonnar, psychiatrist

  • follows the seven students during their first and second year in the classroom at Harvard University, where they learn about human anatomy and physiology.

  • tracks the students in their third and fourth years of medical school as they first interact with patients during their tenure in Boston's teaching hospitals.

  • shows the students graduating and being matched with the hospitals where they will do their internships and residencies.

Hour 2 of the program:

  • reports on each of the doctors as they begin their internships and for the first time experience the responsibility that being a physician entails.

  • follows the doctors over nearly two decades as they pursue different medical specialties or, in some cases, change directions in their careers.

  • explores what each doctor does in his or her present-day career.

  • looks at how the doctors' personal lives have changed over time.

  • presents several doctors' reflections on whether they would pursue medicine again if they were to start over.
