Liver Bioartificial livers are currently under development. Like kidney dialysis machines, these operate outside the body, using live human or pig liver cells grown in the laboratory to process components of a patient's blood, until such time as the patient recovers or receives a liver transplant. (1, 2, 3) Researchers are also in the beginning stages of trying to grow a full-sized human liver. |
