Bioartificial livers are currently under development. Like kidney dialysis machines, these operate outside the body, using live human or pig liver cells grown in the laboratory to process components of a patient's blood, until such time as the patient recovers or receives a liver transplant. (1, 2, 3) Researchers are also in the beginning stages of trying to grow a full-sized human liver.
