For patients with acute lung disease or those with chronic lung disease who are awaiting a lung transplant, researchers are fashioning artificial lung devices, or oxygenators. One such device, now in an advanced state of development at the McGowan Center for Artificial Organ Development, oxygenates the blood before it gets to the lungs and is designed for temporary support of patients suffering from acute lung disease.
